This Week at Jackson’s Orchard

Beginning Labor Day weekend we will transition to fall . . . goodbye peaches, hello sweet, crisp apples, caramel apples, pumpkins and so much more!

It’s apple season – we’re currently picking Gala and Jonathan apples. Apple pricing is $2/lb | $9/half-peck (5 lbs) | $17/peck (10lbs) | $25/half-bushel (21lbs). We’ve also started making fresh squeezed apple cider weekly. And the concession stand has added caramel apples to their offerings of homemade ice cream, fried pies and Kentucky Proud Apple BBQ. This week we’ve added Bartlett Pears as we finish up with our final peach picking of the season, Victoria. Watermelon and Cantaloupe are still available. 

Jonathan
The Jonathan apple is a medium size apple, that has a thin red skin, with a sweet taste that can often have a tart tang to it. The Jonathan apple is a wonderful apple for fresh eating but also makes for a great freezing as well as cooking apple.

Because the flesh of the apple may break down a bit during cooking, you can pair the Jonathan with other more dense apples such as the Granny Smith, or Fuji for your pie fillings. The Jonathan apple is also a very juicy apple, making this variety of apple a good choice for juice and cider.

If you plan on storing the Jonathan apple, you can typically store it for about 3-6 months in the refrigerator.

History
The Jonathan apple is a medium-sized sweet apple, with a touch of acid and a tough, but smooth skin. It has a creamy yellow flesh. The apple is said to have originated from an Esopus Spitzenburg seedling in 1826 from the farm of Philip Rick in Woodstock, Ulster County, New York. It may have originally been named the “Rick” apple, but it was soon renamed by Judge Buel, President of Albany Horticultural Society, after Jonathan Hasbrouck, who discovered the apple.

Did you know that the Jonathan apple is actually a parent to many varieties of apples, including; Jonamac, Jonafree, and Jonagold?

Gala
Gala apples have thin yellow to orange skin with light red highlights. Their flesh is dense, crisp and creamy yellow with a mild sweet flavor. Galas tend to be taller than they are wide. Gala’s that are allowed to reach the peak of their sweetness on the tree will have a deeper red hue and a slightly sweeter flavor.

The delicate flavor and texture of the Gala apple shines in fresh preparations. They are perfect for use in fruit, green and chopped salads. Add diced gala to fruit salsas and chutneys. Slice and add to burgers and paninis. Their sweet flavor becomes milder when cooked making them perfect in baked preparations when paired with stronger flavored apples such a Granny Smith, Arkansas Black, Pippin and Crispin. The flavor of pears, winter squash, onions, pecans, turkey, curry, brie, cheddar and Swiss cheese complement Gala apples.

History
Gala apples were developed in New Zealand in 1934 by apple breeder J.H. Kidd. Commercial distribution began in both Europe and the United States in the 1980’s. Gala apples grow well in both warm and cold climates and as result can be found growing in apple growing regions across the globe.

A cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd’s Orange Red, the Gala apple is currently one of the most extensively grown apples in the world. It has an impressive lineage, being related as well to both the Delicious and Cox Orange Pippin varieties. It is also parent to several varieties such as the Jazz, Royal Gala and Pacific Rose.

Bartlett Pears
Details: Yellowing as they ripen, the Bartlett carries a true pyriform “pear shape:” a rounded bell on the bottom half of the fruit, then a definitive shoulder with a smaller neck
Description: Signature sweet pear flavor and aroma with abundant juice
Uses: Eating, Baking, Canning/Preserves, Drying
