This Week at Jackson’s Orchard

Peaches, Cooking Apples, Fresh Vegetables, Playground, Concession Stand, Greenhouse, Specialty Items . . . adding something new each week!

Peach season is here! We’ve started picking our Redhaven yellow freestone peaches in quarts ($5), two-quarts ($10) &  1/2 peck sizes. Seconds and overripes as well as other quantities such as 1/2 bushels should be available. Later this week or next.

We’re finishing up Lodi Apples and our three early plum varieties but have begun picking our Paula Red Apple, another wonderful early-season cooking apple. We expect to be picking our sweet corn by next week. And continue to bring in many options of fresh, local vegetables for your table!

Redhaven Peaches

Paul Red Apples

Paula Red boasts a red blush color with light yellow striping and has a pleasant sweet-tart flavor and good aroma. For many apple lovers, Paula Red is their favorite. Some say its taste has overtones of strawberries or pears.

The firm flesh makes it a good fresh eating and cooking apple, especially good for a delicious, naturally pink applesauce (Check out Jill’s recipe in the “Apple Bites” section of our website.) and for pie making. It is an early season apple normally ripening June, and like most early apples, Paula Red does not keep for too long.

History
Paula Red is a relatively new variety, discovered in Sparta, Michigan. It was discovered in the Fruit Ridge area northwest of Grand Rapids by Lewis Arends in 1960, and named after his wife, Pauline.  He found the chance seedling near a McIntosh block in his 80-acre orchard, so it is commonly thought that Paula Red may have McIntosh in its parentage. The apple debuted in 1968.
